Pathfinder Club
Ballarat Pathfinders is spiritual-recreation program for young people aged 10 to 16 years old. Pathfinders is designed to provide an opportunity for 10-16 year-olds to develop new life skills and attitudes, participate in personal growth, develop a sense of loyalty and team spirit, have respect for God, respect for others, respect for nature and respect for the church. The Ballarat Pathfinder club is run by experienced and committed leaders from the local Ballarat Seventh-day Adventist church. Throughout this program our members participate in a range of activities, including:
Week 1: External Activity - This encompasses leaving the Church environment and particpating in a social activity in a community venue - these activites could include swimming, tennis, 10 pin bowling, badminton, etc.
Week 2: Character Study - During these sessions we study a specific aspect of nature (e.g. an animal, plant, etc) and a particular attribute that we can learn from it. These sessions generally involve a practical aspect too (and sometimes we bring in specimens to be examined).
Week 3: Debrief, Feed & Play - This is essentially the week we kick back, relax and eat, but to start with we review the previous week's character study and how this has helped us in our day-to-day life. Our leaders will have encouraged and challenged us to use this knowledge in the previous week, and this is an opportunity for us to be accountable for this. After our debrief we eat some food (which is based on a particular culture like chinese or italian) and then play games from that culture that focus on team building and other life values.
Week 4: Project - The fourth week focuses on a project whereby we could learn how to sew, make cakes, build a go-kart, model aeroplanes and much, much more. The skills covered in these project weeks are based on the Pathfinder Honours system; where the Pathfinders complete the project and earn the appropriate honour patch for that project. This patch is then sewn onto the Pathfinders' dress uniform sash.
The Pathfinders also particpate in Conference/Reginal events such as Fair days, Expedition (Hiking) weekends, Campourees and Rally days.
All this occurs in an environment that strives to encourage and foster the relationship between the Pathfinders as a group, and most importantly with Jesus Christ.
